Plan change - 3 peaks instead of one.
"Don't be afraid to change your mind". That's what I've heard a lot the last month or two, since my alpine training in December last year. As well as a great time climbing in the Southern Alps, I talked a lot with some local and international climbers with much experience, including climbing Everest. Their response to my plans pretty much boiled down to the Everest climb being "crowded, rubbish-strewn and a bit of a trudge". And, as a relative beginner, "wouldn't I want to do something that was more beautiful and more fun?" After much thought and debate, I took these comments on board.
Instead of Everest itself I'm now attempting three peaks nearby. Imja Tse (Island Peak), Lobuche East and Parchamo, stand to the south and west of Everest, and these are the ones I will attempt to climb with Adventure Consultants in November/December 2010. This also allows me to go later in the year, which is a huge relief, as pressure of work has become an issue. The expedition promises multiple ascents in spectacular surroundings, with awesome views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks: Cho Oyu; Nuptse; Lhotse; Makalu; Amam Dablam and Everest. It's still a big challenge - and a wonderful introduction to climbing in the region. |
